In the beginning,
before anything,
when there was nothing—
You were.
Before time,
Your Spirit hovered,
hovering over the void,
over empty space.
Then You spoke—
O, You spoke and said,
“Let there be light,”
and piercing the darkness,
light came.
Such was the world without You;
such is the landscape of our hearts—
empty, without form, and void.
It was nothing.
But You spoke again:
“Let there be light.”
This time, the Word
that existed in the beginning
became flesh—
the Word incarnate: Jesus, the Lord who saves,
Immanuel, God with us.
This time, God became flesh.
He dwelt among us.
He became like us yet without sin.
He became curse for us,
and was pierced for our sin.
Yet we did not recognize Him.
Searching for Him in the law,
we missed Him.
But the law was fulfilled
through His perfect love and sacrifice—
and still, we did not comprehend.
We thought He deserved it.
He sees all our thoughts,
the motives of our hearts—
dark, devoid of love,
formless without Christ,
nothing but self.
Yet He died
and took our place.
But this was not the end.
Darkness cannot extinguish the light—
the perfect light.
Then came the third day.
No one saw it coming.
While we sat in the silence of Saturday,
thinking it was over,
believing darkness had prevailed—
the third day burst forth.
The Light—
the risen Son—
came from the grave,
defeating death and darkness.
O death, where is your sting?
O grave, where is your victory?
The Son has risen,
and darkness has no hold on Him.
Remember, then—
when your life feels like nothing,
when your heart feels empty,
when you sit in the grave of despair,
Alone in darkness—
when you feel the void,
call on the Son:
Jesus, the Light,
Immanuel, God with us.
His Spirit is hovering over you,
ready to make a home in you.
All that is void and empty—
He longs to fill you,
to form Christ within you.
His light will burst forth
through the darkness,
and sin will have no hold on you.
For His love has power
to set the captive free,
to heal your brokenness,
to make you a light in a dark world—
to carry His presence and His message,
to set others free,
to bring healing,
that He may fill the earth with His glory
through those made in His image,
now in eternal communion
with Him and with one another.
So do you still see nothing?
Look again—
with eyes of faith.
Pay attention.
With Him, out of nothing
came all that you now see.
So may God open your eyes
to see His great love—
and behold
what He can do
with your nothing.
