Lord, forgive us.
Teach us to repent,
to mourn and lament our sin;
to rend our hearts,
to sit in sackcloth and ashes
for the unseen idols
that no one else can see—
but You, and You alone.
How often we walk away from You,
again and again,
through every thought,
every motive,
every desire;
exalting self above You,
consumed by our own will,
and feeling little grief
that we no longer seek You
or inquire of You.
The gods we allow to rule our hearts
promise to satisfy
our deepest longings.
The idols of attention,
fame,
success,
comfort,
approval.
They are not building us;
they are tearing us down,
drawing us farther from You.
Yet You alone
can satisfy these yearnings.
No created thing can fill
what only the Creator can.
You have planted eternity within our hearts,
that we might be satisfied
with You alone.
So once again,
break and rend my heart
for the broken cisterns
I have carved
to fill the empty places within me.
Help me bear fruit
that is true and genuine,
in keeping with repentance.
Draw me back to Your heart,
to love You,
to delight in You,
to long for You
with all that I am,
that I may be filled
with all of You.
Be enthroned,
my gentle and kind Shepherd.
Guide my wandering,
sheepish heart
back to You.
For in You alone
my heart finds rest;
fully known,
fully loved.
So do not grow weary
or lose heart
when you fail,
you weak one.
Just return.
Again and again,
just return.
For that is what
the Father's heart longs for.
You.
Yes—
it longs for you.
